Kylie Minogue’s great-uncle dies suddenly in hospital

The funeral of Dennis Riddiford, originally of Maesteg, takes place at Margam Crematorium tomorrow.
The 80-year-old passed away peacefully last Thursday at Neath Port Talbot Hospital.
Mr Riddiford, a retired carpenter, of Maesteg Road, Cymmer, was the brother of Kylie and Dannii’s grandmother Millie Jones, who moved to Queensland in 1955.
She was a “£10 Pom” – taking advantage of discounted fares under a scheme designed to attract skilled workers to Australia.
The pair’s mother, Carol Jones, was born in Maesteg, where the family ran the local post office.
The Jones family were among the estimated 710,000 Britons seeking a new life in Australia with the £10 ticket scheme.
Kylie’s mother was 12 years old when she emigrated to Australia with her mother, settling in Townsville, Queensland.
Carol, a former dancer, then met and married Ron Minogue, moving to Melbourne where she gave birth to daughters Kylie and Dannii and son Brendan, who works as a news cameraman in Australia.
She and her sister Dannii have visited their great-uncle and other Welsh relatives a number of times since they hit the big time.
Kylie reportedly once said she’d have been happy to have followed her family into running the post office if they hadn’t emigrated.
The pop princess has always been open about her ancestry and has often taken pride in her Welsh roots.
She once told the BBC presenter Jonathan Ross: “I was born in Melbourne but my roots will always be in Wales.”
When Kylie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, Mr Riddiford praised the way his great niece was dealing with the illness.
Speaking at the time, he praised the 38-year-old for fighting the disease and continuing to “look forward”.
He said: “She’s done marvellous – just fantastic.”
Mr Riddiford had kept in touch with some of the members of the family who had emigrated to Australia.
It is not known if the star or other members of her family in Australia will travel to Wales for the funeral.
Kylie Minogue’s publicist, Infinite PR, said the star would not comment on personal matters.
